POWER-GEN 2018
Inside A New Generation Of Power Dense Diesel Engines
Perkins has introduced three new engines that promise to have a significant impact on the Electric Power (EP) industry. These engines, the 7 liter 1206, 9.3 liter 1706 and 18 liter 2806, set new benchmarks for power density across a comprehensive range of EP applications.
Power density is an increasingly important metric of engine efficiency which essentially means generating more power in less space. The new engines are physically smaller yet produce an even greater output. For EP applications an engine with high power density can make a huge difference to the bottom line.
The engine is easier for an OEM to package, allows for a less complex installation and reduces transportation costs. Because it’s more efficient, end users get the benefit of reduced fuel consumption along with a smaller footprint which can be very important in today’s congested urban environments.
In the past, achieving higher power density often meant trading off durability, reliability and the ability to produce rated power under adverse operating conditions. Perkins engineers addressed each of these issues in designing the new engines and successfully overcame them.
New fuel systems and cooling packages allow the latest engines to reach their maximum power ratings, even at high altitudes and high ambient temperatures. In practical terms, that they can be operated in the middle of a desert or high on a mountain and still deliver rated performance.

Perkins New Engines
The 1206
The new 7 liter Perkins® 1206 replaces the existing 8.8 liter 1506 platform while delivering the same 220 kWe maximum output. It is 20 percent more power dense and 20 percent lighter than the 1506 giving OEMs and end users a reduced package size, lower fuel consumption and lower running costs. The 1206 is U.S. EPA Tier 3 emissions ready compared with the Tier 2 capable 1506.
New technologies on the 1206 include: twin series turbocharging for improved engine response; a higher-pressure fuel system with more precise control which delivers improved performance across the board; and, high specification core engine components to maximize durability while delivering class-leading power output and performance.
With the highest power density in its class, the 1206 sets a new market leading benchmark for power density. This means customers get a cleaner and greener product, with added benefits and without compromising performance.

200 kWe Prime / 220 kWe Standby
The 1706
The new 9.3 liter Perkins® 1706 engine produces 350 kWe providing superior output and performance to the previous 13 liter 2206 engine platform it replaces. It is 22 percent more power dense than the 2206 and delivers all the benefits of the new 1206 -- reduced running costs, a smaller package size and comprehensive emissions compliance.
Key features include a compact enhanced air cleaner package; an improved fan drive system; new fuel lines and a new-generation fuel system. A cutting-edge new cooling pack design lets the engine achieve full power ratings under extreme ambient conditions. Together, these new features are the building blocks for exceptional performance from such a small engine.

The New 2806
The new 18 liter Perkins® 2806 engine can produce up to 660 kWe which complements the existing Perkins 4006 engine range at this power node and gives customers an option to choose the right product for their needs. Compared to competitive products offering the same power output the 2806 provides 28 percent greater power density, a 35 percent reduction in package size, a 48 percent smaller footprint and a 23 percent height reduction.
The new 2806 features twin parallel turbochargers each serving three cylinders; the latest power generation technology; new pistons; an upgraded camshaft; new air cleaners and fuel system; and, an upgraded radiator. High specification components make the 2806 both powerful and durable.
It is also efficient, typically delivering 10 percent better fuel economy than an average 23 liter engine. This means customers can package this powerful engine in a much smaller enclosure saving space, installation and transportation costs while improving performance.
The new 2806 is Perkins first engine to meet customer requirements for 660 kWe in locations operating at 50 Hz. It also provides increased power density for customers with 60 Hz operating requirements. And, like the new 1206 and 1706, the 2806 offers a lower cost alternative to the current engine, delivering reduced running costs from a smaller package size and with broad emissions compliance.

Built For The Future
Emission regulations are growing stricter across the globe and Perkins new engines have all the technologies needed to meet them. From unregulated parts of the Middle East and Africa to the most highly regulated territories of the U.S. (U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final capable) and Europe (EU Stage V capable) these engines are up to meeting any clean air challenge.
Perkins builds these engines on a common core which can be configured as necessary to meet emission standards up to and including the most stringent anywhere in the world. This capability is particularly important for customers in the rental and standby power markets who can save the cost of engineering different engines by using the same core engine while meeting standards in either a less regulated or highly regulated emissions markets.
Diesel technology has improved dramatically over the last decade, and Perkins leveraged improvements in fuel systems, turbocharging, cooling and more in designing these engines and optimizing them for EP applications. Perkins is virtually the only engine manufacturer focused on improving power density across its product range and for the EP industry in particular. Products like the 1206, 1706 and 2806, mean that EP customers can run more cost effectively with cleaner, smaller, more efficient engines with no sacrifice in durability, reliability or performance.
