Emissions
Brazil Mar-1
Brazil leads South America in regulating emissions from off-road diesel engines with its Brazil MAR-1 Nonroad emissions standards. The standards apply to engines rated from 19 kW (25 hp) to over 75 kW (100 hp), and is being phased in from January 1, 2015, until January 1, 2019. Perkins engines are designed to meet MAR-1 standards. Our engineers are ready to help you develop machines that make the most of these new engines.
Brazil leads the continent in setting emission standards with its PROCONVE regulations for road vehicles, and is the only Latin American country with emissions standards for off-road diesel engine applications.
In 2011, the Brazilian National Environmental Council (CONAMA) adopted a resolution limiting exhaust emissions and noise from new construction and farm machinery. Referred to as PROCONVE MAR-1, it is the first standard to regulate emissions from off-road mobile machinery in Brazil. It sets emission limits equivalent to EU Stage IIIA/U.S. EPA Tier 3 standards.
Phasing in of limits
MAR-1 emission standards are being phased in from 2015 to 2019. The implementation dates depend on the power category and type of machinery (construction or farm).
Construction machinery and equipment engines rated over 75 kW (100 hp) had to meet the standards by January 1, 2015; and by January 1, 2017, engines used in agricultural machinery and equipment will also have to comply.
For construction machinery and equipment engines rated 37–75 kW (50-100 hp), the emissions standards came into force from January 1, 2015. Where they are used in agricultural machinery and equipment, it is January 1, 2019.
Engines rated 19–37 kW and used in construction machinery and equipment must meet the standards by January 1, 2017, or by January 1, 2019 where they are used in agricultural machinery and equipment.
Big in agriculture
Agriculture is a significant market for Perkins Brazil, dominated by agricultural tractors. Among our customers in this market are OEMsS such as Stara and AGCO, which owns several important brands such as Massey Ferguson.
The construction industry is also important for Perkins, with our engines powering wheel loaders, graders, hydraulic excavators, track-type tractors, soil compactors, backhoe loaders and other machines. In the extremely competitive EP market, Perkins also competes against the world’s biggest engine manufacturers in Brazil.
Manufactured in Curitiba
Perkins Brazil manufactures both electronic and mechanical versions of the 1100 Series at our world class facility in Curitiba. Our mechanical and electronic engines have been certified as meeting the MAR-1 standard for construction equipment.
Curitiba will also continue to build products that meet lower emissions standards for use across the rest of South America. This means we are able to match the right engine for your applications, whether they are designed for.
Perkins Brazil engineers understand the MAR-1 standards and can help you prepare for the new emissions requirements. By working with us, you will benefit from this expertise and learn how to get the most from these new engines, adding real value to your application.
Our understanding of local market needs is a plus when you are planning on integrating new engines into your machines. We are currently working with several original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to develop machines that meet MAR-1 requirements.
