Turbochargers boost performance
Turbochargers are integral parts of many Perkins engines, precision engineered to strict tolerances. They play a key part in how the engines perform. If they fail, replacement turbochargers are quick and simple to obtain, helping to minimise your downtime and get your equipment back up and running as quickly as possible.
The turbocharger, commonly called the turbo, is an integral part of many – but not all – diesel engines. It improves performance and increases power output.
A turbocharger works by taking its power from the exhaust gases that in conventional engines would be released into the atmosphere and running them through an additional turbine that pulls in air from the compressor. This increased air intake means that the combustion process can have a better air to fuel mix and therefore create more power from each stroke of the engine.
Very high temperatures
The result is that a turbo generates significant additional power for the engine, typically up to 40 percent more than on a more conventional, naturally aspirated engine. And because the turbo uses exhaust gases that would otherwise be wasted, fuel economy is increased and the ratio of exhaust gas to power generated falls.
The turbocharger is a highly complicated piece of engineering
The whole process involves very high temperatures, requiring the turbocharger to be capable of operating at great loads for long periods. Some turbochargers in Perkins engines will operate at speeds of up to 180,000 revolutions a minute, often for hours at a time. This means that the manufacturing processes have to be extremely good, with bearings and oil systems constantly under pressure.
Precision key to manufacturing
Precision in manufacturing is the key. A typical turbocharger will be manufactured with tolerances as fine as 1/1,000,000 of an inch. That is vital if it is to work to its maximum efficiency and you are to optimise the fuel consumption and the performance of the engine.
Because of the complicated nature of the turbocharger, it if fails, it may not be worth trying to repair individual parts. The simplest option is to replace the faulty turbo with a new one. By buying an original Perkins part, you know that it has been manufactured to fit your specific engine model by the people who built the engine in the first place.
