A powerful new driving force for tractors
Perkins is building on its promises to develop outstanding solutions for agricultural customers, with two new engines designed exclusively for tractors – the Perkins® Syncro 2.2 and 3.6 tractor engines.
Perkins® Syncro engines are state-of-the-art powertrains, designed to deliver exceptional value, flexibility and performance for compact machines.
While the range of 1.7, 2.2, 2.8 and 3.6 litre industrial engines already meet the needs of a broad range of farm machinery, Perkins made a promise to expand its offering to include solutions specifically tailored for tractors at some of the market’s key power nodes.
Perkins has made good on that promise, with the unveiling of the Perkins® Syncro 2.2 and 3.6 tractor engine platforms.
The engines fill an important space in the market for reliable power between 37 and 100 kW (50 and 134 hp). The Perkins Syncro 3.6 tractor engine delivers 100 kW (134 hp) and up to 530 Nm of torque, while the 2.2 tractor engine gives 55 kW (74 hp) and up to 270 Nm of torque.

These exceptional new power solutions bring all the benefits of the Perkins Syncro range – outstanding power density, robust reliability, tight packaging and class-leading performance – into the compact tractor market for the very first time.
“The development of these engines is all about reaffirming our commitment to tractor and agricultural machinery manufacturers,” said product marketing manager for Perkins Syncro, Alex Eden. “These new options ensure we have the right product offering to meet all our customers’ agricultural needs.”
The cornerstone of your machine
The unbeatable new engines are a testament to Perkins long heritage in agriculture and our deep understanding of the critical requirements of customers in the sector.
These new models have been specifically engineered to provide reliable power for mid-range tractors which have no engine chassis or rails. Instead, the engines themselves form the chassis of the tractor.
“Only businesses with a great knowledge of tractors can build these types of engines,” said Alex. “Our designers and engineers have developed stress blocks, a structural sump and other key components that have the strength for manufacturers to attach the front end of the tractor to the front of the engine and the transmission to the rear.
“We’ve developed simple, strong bolting arrangements that aid integration and clean, tight, narrow packaging that meets customers’ strict space requirements and ensures their machines can have a good turning circle and excellent sight lines.
“This isn’t about simply installing an engine. It’s about building the cornerstone of agricultural machines.”
Precision testing adds value for OEMs
Because your reputation – and ours – depends on the reliability of our engines, we rigorously tested and validated our new tractor engines to the most stringent standards.
“We started with the strong validated core of the Perkins Syncro industrial engine,” said Alex. “Once the engine’s key innovations were designed, such as the structural sump and balancers, we took them into our test cells. These parts underwent thousands of hours of validation tests to ensure they worked seamlessly during machine operation.
“We also ran a pilot programme with a lead customer out in the field as well as our own field trials. We’re now getting ready to receive the production hardware we need to build and ship to our first Perkins Syncro tractor customers in 2020.”
The advantages of powering your machines with Perkins Syncro tractor engines are compelling. They include optimised torque curves for farming activities, excellent fuel consumption, easy service access, and big improvements in both noise and package size.
With the addition of our new tractor engine platforms, Perkins can meet agricultural original equipment manufacturers’ (OEMs) machinery power needs, across the board.
“We have a broad and sweeping power portfolio that means OEMs can enjoy Perkins proven performance and durability across the full range of their machines. And, by using just one supplier for all their engine needs, they can save themselves time and money,” said Alex.
“With all their impressive features and customer-focused benefits, the Perkins Syncro 2.2 and 3.6 tractor engines mark a real step change on the competition.”
