Technology in manufacturing
Modern technology has revolutionised manufacturing. In controlling and monitoring energy use, in making our processes safer and more efficient, and in enabling us to develop new and efficient ways of working, new computerised technology has created a leaner, fitter, and more profitable environment.
Computerised, cleaner and safer
Manufacturing has changed from the old inefficient, labour-intensive industry of the past totoday’s highly computerised cleaner and safer operation. Perkins is in the forefront of the change. Wherever possible, machines, robots and computers monitor, control and operate our production processes.
Consistent quality
Increased automation means you can be sure that the quality of everything we produce is absolutely consistent. Computers ensure that every nut on the production line is tightened to precisely the specified torque; robotic paint sprayers not only make for a clear, safer environment for our employees, but also deliver exactly the right covering to each component.
Until the exact standard required for each individual process has been achieved, computer controls will not allow the production line to continue.
“No fault forward” is not just a catchphrase – it’s the reality.

“Customers demand consistent quality – the highest standards every time. Modern technology and computer controls help us to deliver that, in an environmentally sustainable way, everywhere in the world.”
Roman Falinski, mechanical services and environmental manager
Controlled and monitored
The quality of the environment in which our employees work is controlled and monitored more closely than ever before, making our facilities safer and more comfortable places in which to work. At Peterborough, for instance, heating, ventilation and air quality are monitored at some 20,000 separate points – consistently.
This saves energy to help the planet, improves conditions for our employees, and helps to make our manufacturing processes more efficient.
Energy saving
Usage of gas, electricity and water is constantly monitored, so that any malfunctions or wastage can be identified and corrected immediately. This drives down costs, promotes efficiency, and at the same time helps us to minimise our carbon footprint.
Emissions that leave our facilities, whether to the atmosphere or into the sewage and drainage systems, are constantly monitored and purified. All waste material that leaves our Peterborough site is either reused or recycled.
New techniques also cut down on daily energy use – for instance, in providing compressed air to drive a variety of tools around the facility. Where air used to be compressed by noisy, expensive and energy-wasteful machinery, the process is now carried out by energy-efficient systems working in acoustic enclosures to keep noise pollution to a minimum.
New technology at your service
The old labour-intensive practices are gone. Where employees used to be committed to repetitive production-line tasks that sometimes compromised consistent quality, now they control computerised machines that get the job right every time and minimise the risk to the employee.
Whether it is computer control of individual production processes or new lifting equipment and robots to carry out heavy lifting tasks, new technology is constantly at the service of Perkins, our employees, and ultimately our customers.
By committing to the latest technology, we are also committing to the welfare of our teams, the efficiency of our processes, and the quality of the products that we deliver.
