Fuel quality
Achieving fuel cost savings
The cost of fuel is a challenge for all machine operators and we recognise it can have a big effect on profitability. Perkins is committed to finding innovative ways to help you reduce consumption of diesel and diesel exhaust fluid (DEF), both in terms of engine design and overall machine efficiency. We combine engines that deliver superior fuel economy with an approach to engine integration built on decades of experience. All this helps operators worldwide to minimise overall fluid consumption.
Delivering improved fuel consumption goes beyond the engine itself, with overall machine efficiency playing a big part in reducing the burden of fuel costs. Perkins takes a holistic approach to fuel economy, working collaboratively with OEMs to target improvements across a range of areas, including core machine design, driver input, hydraulics set up and cab layout.
Idle time is the enemy of fuel efficiency, with some industry experts estimating it can represent between 40 and 50 percent of total running time. Our engines are optimised, offering TSC1, multi-speed options, multiple rating options, demand fans and hibernate idle modes to make sure that the engine can be controlled to the most optimum condition by the machine.

Efficiency savings
We also know that operator input can have a big influence on fuel economy and the Perkins engine range uses J1939 fuel consumption data so that key information is displayed in the cab to help the operator drive efficiently.
Meanwhile, our integration offering means we can often help with electronic integration of the engine, hydraulics and cooling system to make efficiency savings at the machine level.
At the key machine power nodes, Perkins gives you engine power, speed and displacement options to allow flexibility or commonality with other machines or across a weight range of excavators. Minimising engine displacement – when combined with the hydraulic and control optimisation – will also give significant fuel saving benefits.
