Education – help from Perkins for tomorrow’s generation
Education is the key to a bright future, and Perkins and its employees are committed to helping the generation growing up today get a good start in life. We support education locally and internationally, at all levels, with funding as well as with training programmes, donations of classroom supplies and the personal involvement of our people.
Perkins commitment to education, in the communities where we are based around the world, may start with members of our team providing stationery and writing materials for underprivileged students – but it extends into sustained work with a variety of schools, colleges and universities.
In particular, we can offer our advice and experience in the STEM subjects of science, technology, engineering and mathematics – helping to bring the subjects to life and demonstrate their relevance outside the school environment.
Our commitment might involve sponsoring a school or educational project to get it up and running. It might be our employees going into schools to spread the word about engineering. Or it might be training schemes for apprentices and students. The reasoning behind the commitment is the same.
It’s our contribution to the generation of tomorrow, and an important investment today in the communities where we live and work.
Peterborough young engineers
We are closely involved with Peterborough Young Engineers, a group which organises technical presentations, social evenings and quizzes to encourage young people with an interest in engineering.
Imagineering
Across the UK, Perkins is a dedicated supporter of The Imagineering Foundation, an organisation which exists to introduce young people between eight and 16 years old to the excitement of engineering and technology through hands-on activities in schools, clubs, fairs and exhibitions.
Schools, colleges and universities
In China, Perkins Wuxi has a close relationship with the nearby Technical School, with regular visits to talk to students about the world of engineering science and question and answer sessions about the work of the facility.
We take on a number of students as interns each year, each of who receive intensive classroom training from Perkins employees, along with hands-on sessions in the facility. When they graduate from the Technical School, successful interns are offered the chance of full-time work as a Perkins employee.
In the U.S., meanwhile, the facility at Griffin, Georgia, holds community days when the site is opened to the public, and our employees take part in a variety of projects and activities at local schools. Most of these are linked to the STEM subjects of science, technology, engineering and maths.
In Wuxi and in Curitiba, Brazil, our teams raise money to provide clothes, books and stationery for underprivileged students.
And in Aurangabad, India, months before the facility was completed, Perkins had already adopted a secondary school in the nearby village of Ladgaon, Zilla Parishad School, a co-educational establishment of about 140 pupils. Employees expect the relationship to develop over the next few years, as they offer practical and hands-on support and encouragement to the school.
Around the world, we’re investing time and money in the future of our local young people
We also work closely with colleges and universities across the UK, particularly with Loughborough and Bath universities, where engineers from all levels in the company support the universities’ engineering programmes.
